11:30–12:00            Lunch behind NHE

12:00–12:30            Quiet time – read

12:30–12:45            Prepare for walk to Kinzie Beach (NHE)

12:45 – 4:15            Kinzie Beach – geography/orienting, Tides and tidebook, beach sand lab, rocks, bluff, glacier, free play. (JD)

4:15 – 4:30              Back to NHE

4:30– 5:00               Games, collect buttons, goodbyes

Tuesday

 

9:00 – 9:20          Opening circle– (Portico-All)

9:30-10: 00  Tour NHE Exhibit – and intro to seismograph (All)

10:00-10:15         Snack              

10:15-11:00 Play with waves--3 groups (All)

·                Standing wave machine

·                Slinkies

·                Tabletop Earthquakes

11:00-11:30 Earthquake waves (NHE, JL,)

11:30–12:00        Lunch on lawn behind NHE

12:30 –1:00  Hatchet

1:00-1:15             Marine Habitats around dock, (2 groups, JD & CC)

1:15-2:00             Marine Exhibit explorations and feeding (CC)

2:00-2:15             Future Fossils of America, in exhibit (JD)

2:15-2:30             Snack

2:30-3:15             Round Robin—15 minute rotations

·                BellyBio (JD)

·                Concretions (Meg)

·                Make fossil medallions (CC)

3:15 – 4:30          Free play on the beach to the right of the dock. Gl. erratic, collect rocks to cut with rock saw later.

4:30 – 5:00          Back to NHE classroom or Portico – games, closure, collect buttons

 

Wednesday

 

9:00 – 9:30          Opening circle on portico – games, songs, intro to day’s activities

9:30 – 10:00        Reading the Rocks (rock cycle) Use rocks picked up earlier and our beach rocks, wet, talk about rock formation (JD)

10:00–10:15        Snack

10:15–10:45        What’s inside the earth (John’s slides)

Model earth with playdough. Short talk on seismic instruments (JL)

11:00–11:30        Start making seismometers

11:30–12:00        Lunch

12:00–12:30        Read Hatchet

1:00-1:30      Finish making seismometers

1:30-2:10 Round-robin (20 minute rotations:

·                Test your seismometer (JL)

·                Build an earthquake-proof (we hope!) building (CC)

·                Rock saw: cut rocks picked up the day before (JD)

2:10-2:30     Short intro to plate tectonics, “edible plate tectonics”

2:30-3:00     Final rotation (above)

3:00-3:15     Liquifaction demo outside

3:15 – 4:30          Beach activities –Andy Goldsworthy sand sculptures

4:30 – 5:00          Back to NHE, closure

10:30-11:30  Ranger talk at Lake Crescent

12:00-12:30         Drive up to Sol Duc

12:30-3:00           Play in Hot Springs

3:00 – 5:30          Drive back to Port Townsend

12:30-1:00    Finish up buildings (or other activity)

1:00-2:00             Test each building on shake table.

2:15-2:30             Prep for volcanoes on beach

2:30-3:30     Build volcanoes on beach – sand sculptures, photos
